The Cobar Sound Chapel is a permanent sound installation artwork located west of Cobar, Outback New South Wales, Australia. It was completed in early 2022 and is a creation by composer and sound artist Georges Lentz in collaboration with architect Glenn Murcutt.
The Cobar Sound Chapel is an intimate sound space, a marriage of music, architecture, art, poetry, light and nature. The 43-hour four-channel sound art cycle heard inside the Chapel changes constantly, from mainly mysterious and otherwordly to the occasional burst of a much more intense sound - to complete silence.
Important contributors also include the four musicians of
The Noise String Quartet, Indigenous Cobar artist Sharron Ohlsen, as well as technical and artistic adviser Oliver Miller.

Entrance to the Cobar Sound Chapel is free. However we do ask visitors to leave some

with the Museum staff. This is unfortunately necessary to keep the Chapel safe in its remote location - we thank you for your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
We would like to express our gratitude to our principal sponsors
Manuka Resources
for their ongoing generous support.

We also wish to thank
Cobar Shire Council
for graciously making the land available for the construction of the Cobar Sound Chapel, for their general support and for upgrading the access road to the Chapel.
In particular, we express our heartfelt thanks to the former mayor of Cobar, the late
Lilliane Brady OAM (1930-2021),
who gave the initial permission to use council land for the purposes of a new artwork.

We acknowledge and pay our deep respects to the Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan people, the traditional owners of the land upon which the Cobar Sound Chapel stands.
